Study: Frequent Exercise Improves the Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Exercise Helps Irritable Bowel Syndrome

New findings by Swedish researchers at Sahlgrenska University in Gothenburg further support claims that regular exercise can help to dramatically decrease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Altogether a total of 102 previously documented adult IBS patients, ranging from ages 18 to 65, took part in this new IBS study. The participants were randomly assigned into one of two groups:

  1. An experimental group whose members where instructed to increase their daily activity level
  2. A comparative control group whose members were told to maintain their current lifestyle habits.

Participants in the more active experimental group were asked to perform some sort of moderate to vigorous physical exercise, such as quick-paced walking or running, for an minimum of 20 to 30 minutes, at least three to five days each week, for an overall period lasting three months.

Study: Following a Vegetarian Diet May Protect You From Diverticular Disease

Vegetarian Diet

There are a lot of sound arguments in favor of vegetarianism. Regardless of whether it’s because of animal-rights, environmental concerns, or done in the interest of general personal health — not eating meat is something many people are very passionate about.

However, for individuals who are at high-risk for, or already suffering from certain forms of bowel disease, newly published research may present the strongest argument yet for going vegetarian.

The British Medical Journal recently presented the findings of a study carried out by researchers at the University of Oxford’s Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU), which suggest that individuals who follow a vegetarian diet may be up to a third less likely, on average, to develop diverticular disease than those who regularly eat meat.

Diverticular disease is especially prevalent among westerners, and is statistically one of the most common forms of bowel disease in both the United States and UK.

Colon Cancer Risks May Be Reduced by Omega-3 Fatty Acids, According to Study

Man With Colon Cancer

A preliminary investigation into the connection between Omega-3 Fatty acids and colon cancer, shows that there may be a surprisingly strong positive link between the two in some population groups, but not others.

About the Study & Its Unusual Findings

Using a population derived test sample of just over 1,500 white participants (about half with colon cancer and half without) and smaller comparison sample of about 370 black participants (also split with and without cancer), researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle (NIEHS) in North Carolina, found an especially strong correlation between the consumption of Omega-3 Fatty acids and reduced rates of colon cancer, especially in individuals of European ancestry.

Study: Children That Don’t Like Fruits & Veggies are 13x More Likely to Become Constipated

The Journal of Clinical Nursing recently published the results of a study into the connection between functional constipation and aversion to fruits and vegetables in children.

While it may seem obvious that kids who enjoy eating these healthy foods are more likely to exhibit healthy bowel function and regularity than their more finicky peers, the large difference between the two groups is still surprising.

Professor Yuk Ling Chan, a researcher at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and his associate Dr. Moon Fai Chan (no relation) of the National University of Singapore, conducted the in-depth survey-based investigation into constipation with the help of just under 400 Hong Kong students.

The children, ranging in ages eight to ten years, were each asked to answer a series of questions regarding both their dietary and bathroom habits. By analyzing the results, the two researchers were able to estimate a 13 fold increase in functional constipation among children who do not like eating fruits and vegetables. They also found that children who regularly drink less than 400 ml of fluid per day are eight times more likely to become constipated, and that boys, overall, were slightly less prone to developing symptoms of constipation.

Peppermint May Help Relieve Symptoms of IBS

Peppermint Helps IBS Symptoms

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases facing the population today. It is classified by mild to severe abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, and is usually triggered by stress and poor diet.

Women are particularly vulnerable to this condition (estimates show that almost twice as many women experience IBS than men), and research shows that it costs millions of dollars each year in doctor’s visits, lost productivity and absenteeism.

A study done at University of Adelaide, in Australia, confirms what ancient holistic health practitioners and today’s naturopaths have known for many years. The mint plant, and in the case of this study, peppermint, can help relieve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. And in a country where an astounding 20% of the population suffer from this digestive imbalance, it is a crucial discovery.
