What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Facts

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is one name for two very similar diseases, both of which cause destructive swelling and inflammation in the intestinal tract – Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.

These two conditions are characterized by nearly identical symptoms, making it difficult for even trained professionals to distinguish between them. Nearly one and a half million people in the United States alone suffer from one of these two diseases.

The Foundation for Clinical Research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease defines IBD as a disease in which some part of the bowel (esophagus, stomach, small intestine and the colon) is inflamed. Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) report the following facts about IBD:

  • About 1.4 million Americans suffer from IBD, with approximately 30,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
  • According to a 1990 study, the medical costs of IBD in the U.S. totaled $1.4-$1.8 billion annually.
  • Surgery and inpatient care were estimated to account for roughly one-half of this amount.
  • The disability costs of illness (lost labor productivity) were estimated to be $0.4-$0.8 billion, making the total estimated annual cost of IBD $1.8-$2.6 billion.

Sea Salt Colon Cleanse

Out of all the countless home remedies for colon cleansing and full body detoxification, simply drinking sea salt dissolved in water may just be one of the oldest methods still in use. But is it safe to excessively increase your salt intake?

Sea Salt Colon Cleanse

How this cleansing method works: You quickly ingest more salt than the your system is able to absorb, thereby forcing the excess through the small intestines and out of the body.

The general idea the sea salt colon cleanse is that the salt will quickly absorb toxins and kill off unwanted microorganisms, as well as draw excess water into the bowel to flush them out. Unfortunately, while this time tested technique may achieve the some of the desired results, they come at a steep price.

Why A Sea Salt Colon Cleanse Doesn’t Work

First and foremost, it’s no secret that consuming such large quantities of sodium can have a tremendous negative side effects. A typical Sea Salt Colon Cleanse recipe calls for two or more table spoons of sea salt (or un-iodized table salt) to be dissolved in a quart of hot water, and then drunk while still warm. Some recipes call for several such quarts a day.

Study: Following a Vegetarian Diet May Protect You From Diverticular Disease

Vegetarian Diet

There are a lot of sound arguments in favor of vegetarianism. Regardless of whether it’s because of animal-rights, environmental concerns, or done in the interest of general personal health — not eating meat is something many people are very passionate about.

However, for individuals who are at high-risk for, or already suffering from certain forms of bowel disease, newly published research may present the strongest argument yet for going vegetarian.

The British Medical Journal recently presented the findings of a study carried out by researchers at the University of Oxford’s Cancer Epidemiology Unit (CEU), which suggest that individuals who follow a vegetarian diet may be up to a third less likely, on average, to develop diverticular disease than those who regularly eat meat.

Diverticular disease is especially prevalent among westerners, and is statistically one of the most common forms of bowel disease in both the United States and UK.

Colon Cancer Risks May Be Reduced by Omega-3 Fatty Acids, According to Study

Man With Colon Cancer

A preliminary investigation into the connection between Omega-3 Fatty acids and colon cancer, shows that there may be a surprisingly strong positive link between the two in some population groups, but not others.

About the Study & Its Unusual Findings

Using a population derived test sample of just over 1,500 white participants (about half with colon cancer and half without) and smaller comparison sample of about 370 black participants (also split with and without cancer), researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle (NIEHS) in North Carolina, found an especially strong correlation between the consumption of Omega-3 Fatty acids and reduced rates of colon cancer, especially in individuals of European ancestry.

Accutane & IBD: Is There A Connection?

There is more and more news coming out on the link between people who have taken Accutane and the rise in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This oral pill, also known as Roaccutane or Isotretinion, is a pharmaceutical drug derived from chemical extracts of Vitamin A, or retinol.

Accutane and IBD

On the market since the early 1980’s, it was aimed at helping clear up difficult and chronic cases of skin acne. Used by tens of thousands of people in the United States, this drug has become notorious for its noxious side effects, including skin cracking, bleeding and an inability to withstand sunlight. Today it should come as no surprise that it may be linked to digestive conditions such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

What is IBD?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but not the same condition) is a serious illness involving the inflammation of the colon and large intestines. Difficult to treat, this inflammation is the result of a colon that cannot operate with its usual control over muscle motility.
