At any given time, constipation and other digestive disorders affects approximately 1 out of every 5 people in America. Let’s face it, suffering from constipation is problematic, embarrassing, uncomfortable, at times painful, and just not fun!

Here is a list of constipation remedies that will help you get the relief you seek. It is encouraged for you to do further research on any food or food product, then decide for yourself whether you should consume it.

1. Drink More Water

Water is one of the best constipation remedies out there. Simply drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces (200 pounds = 100 ounces) of purified water a day. Water is vital to your body, and makes up approximately 80% of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. Water will also help moisten the intestines, so that the bowels will move easily.

2. Bulk up on High Fiber Foods

By increasing your intake of foods high in fiber, you will greatly reduce your chances of developing any symptoms of constipation, as well as prevent many other colon-related health problems. When possible, always buy organic fruits and vegetables. Find a local farmer’s market in or near your city, especially in rural areas. Below is a list of high fiber foods you can add to your diet to help keep you regular, as well as provide constipation relief. Eat plenty of these foods throughout the day.

  • Beans, Peas & Legumes – Low in both fat and cholesterol, beans and legumes are high in fiber and protein. They make for a great substitute for meat.
  • Broccoli – Very high in fiber and an excellent natural antibiotic, broccoli has also demonstrated some cancer-fighting potential.
  • Dried Fruit – When dried organically, dried fruit keeps much of the nutritional properties of the raw variety. Dried figs, prunes, and apricots are great intestinal movers.
  • Raw Nuts & Seeds – Raw almonds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, hazelnuts, and chestnuts lead the way as the best choices, because they are high in fiber, protein, vitamin E and calcium. Nuts and seeds are also very filling, so you don’t have to eat many before feeling satisfied. Chew thoroughly for easier digestion.
  • Cherries – A natural blood stimulant, cherries have been used for centuries to detoxify the kidneys. Cherries also have the anti-cancer compound, ellagic acid, and are very effective at relieving constipation.
  • Bananas – High in fiber and a natural bulk-producing agent, bananas are great for promoting easy digestion.
  • Apples – The high pectin levels in apples stimulate the bowels and also provide bulk for bowel movements. One of the best natural laxative foods is organic apple cider vinegar. Just pour a small amount into a glass of purified water and drink it in the morning.
  • Carrots – A rich source of Beta-Carotene, carrots are natural body detoxifiers. Also high in pectin, carrots add bulk to stool and can stimulate bowel contractions.
  • Green Vegetables – Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, and turnip greens are very high in vitamins and minerals.

3. Drink Freshly-Squeezed Juices

Drinking plenty of freshly squeezed fruit and vegetables juices is another easy-to-do remedy for constipation. This is not referring to the sugary bottles of juice sold in stores. Try buying a juicer to make your own juice right at home. Many juices are packed with antioxidants to help flush out toxins, dissolve some fibers, and not allow food particles to accumulate in the lining of the intestines. These homemade drinks are great remedies for constipation, however, it must be noted that juicing takes away the majority of healthy dietary fiber that helps keep you regular.

4. Consume Healthy Oils!

Use organic oils like olive oil and coconut oil when cooking foods or as a replacement whenever a recipe calls for butter. Such organic oils are great home remedies for constipation because they help stimulate digestion and relieve upset stomach, flatulence and heartburn. Use Omega-3 oils like hemp, flax-seed, avocado or olive oils while detoxifying. This will help lubricate the intestinal walls, allowing the toxins to be absorbed by the oil, and eliminated by the body.

5. Take Probiotics

Organic fruits such as banana and tomato, and vegetables such as garlic, onion, and asparagus, are high in probiotic content if they are not rinsed or treated like the non-organic varieties. What are probiotics?

Probiotics are living microorganisms that assist your bodies’ natural balance. They can be delivered in a number of ways, but most often are found in live fruits and vegetables, liquid or capsule forms. One of their most popular functions is the promotion of intestinal balance and general digestive health, which means they also make a great compliment to your colon cleansing routine.

6. Take an Oxygen Colon Cleanser

Another unlikely consiptation remedy, is to take an oxygen colon cleanser. They have been clinically proven to help relieve constipation, as well as cleanse out any toxins lingering in your digestive tract. The also help promote the growth and healthy function of beneficial bacteria, which naturally assist digestion. When used in conjunction with a probiotic supplement, oxygen colon cleansers work great for relieving constipation.
